Autumn is here and you can feel in the air. Colors changing. Leaves Falling. Bears struggling to stay in third place in the NFC North. And National TV Talk Show Day is today. It comes our way every October 23, in honor of the King of Late Night TV Johnny Carson. Much like how San Diego got it's name, nobody knows exactly when this began.

As a radio guy with a face for it, I don't envy TV people. There's the ability to read cue cards without looking like it, plus you have to comb your hair, stand up straight, wear pants and smile a lot. It seems like too high of standards.

There have been many great, funny late night hosts. Carson, Letterman, Conan, Paar, and Ferguson. Nowadays, there are many trying to be added to the list of legendary hosts. Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart to name a few. There are also some who were less than stellar. I'm looking at you Chevy Chase and Magic Johnson.

Here are few of my favorite late night moments:

  • 1

Robin Williams First Appearance with Johnny Carson

Robin Williams on The Tonight Show 10/14/81

  • 2

Craig Ferguson on Brittney Spears Meltdown and His Alcoholism

I don't stay up to watch late night TV too often, especially the 11:30 p.m. shows. I did catch this one though and I think it's one of the best monologues ever. It's serious, but told in an entertaining way. He was spot on.

  • 3

    David Letterman with Tom Waits

There are few minds that run like Tom's and he always a great guest with his friend Dave. You never know where he's going.

  • 4

    Bill Murray on Letterman

Bill was Dave's first guest on the old NBC show. Here, he shows up after a ski accident and brought video of it with him.

    Steve Martin Leaves Johnny Carson

In the '70s, Steve Martin was a great stand up comic and appeared on SNL with the original cast usually as on of the two 'wild and crazy guys' with Dan Aykroyd. By 1978, he was starting his film career with 'The Jerk.' He was so busy he had to blow off Carson.
