Lots of Tickets Written in Illinois on Speed Awareness Day

Many were unaware that Wednesday, July 25th was Illinois Speed Awareness Day. By the end of the day, quite a few found out about it the hard way.

In a statewide effort to make Illinois' highways and bi-ways safer for everyone, Speed Awareness Day was created to pound home the message of slowing it down and being more careful when you're behind the wheel.

Some people get it, while others...not so much. However, having an up-close and personal visit with a state, county, or local police officer after being pulled over for speeding should help with the messaging.

According to the Rockford Police Department's Facebook page:

On Wednesday, July 25, the Rockford Police Department participated in the third annual Illinois Speed Awareness Day, a campaign organized by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety. The initiative resulted in 69 citations, 29 warnings, 10 arrests for driving while suspended/revoked, 1 arrest for an outstanding warrant, 1 felony arrest and 1 illegal handgun was recovered.

Illinois State Police gave out 697 citations for speeding and another 566 written warnings during a 24 hour period. Troopers didn’t just hand out speeding violations. They also gave out 350 citations and 675 written warnings for other traffic violations. State police also warned drivers about the “Fatal 4 Violations” that often lead to deadly crashes. They include driving under the influence, speeding, failing to wear a seatbelt and distracted driving.
