Do you recall a year ago when the Speedway gas station in Belvidere was caught charging $11,560.80 for a gallon of gas? For one day, Belvidere had the distinction of being the place that charged the most for a gallon of gas, on the entire planet. Well, that was obviously an error, however, Belvidere's status as a the place to purchase the cheapest gas in the Stateline may soon go out the door.

Belvidere government officials have announced they want to permanently increase the amount you pay for a gallon of gasoline. The Belvidere City council says they will use their Home Rule authority to tack on an extra two cents to each gallon of gas. Home Rule allows a local government to assess gasoline taxes as it sees fit, without voter approval or citizen input. The gas tax is not a done deal yet, but could be soon. A final vote still needs to be taken to approve the tax.

It is estimated the gas tax would cost the average resident an additional $21 a year and would raise between $200,000 - $300,000 a year for the city and would be used for infrastructure improvements.

In Belvidere, the average cost for a gallon of gas as of July 3, 2018 was a $2.65 a gallon. according to Gas Buddy, while Rockford averages $$2.79 a gallon.

While we don't expect gas to cost over $11k a gallon anytime soon, even with the new tax, Belvidere will still have some of the best gasoline prices around.
