Do you think it would ever be legal to gamble on sports in Illinois?

I think we all realize our state is broke. How is Illinois going to get out of debt?

Well, they've started doing things that have affected us all financially like raising taxes and fees. There's only so far they can go with that. I hope.

So, what are some other solutions? Legalizing marijuana? More casinos?

How about sports gambling? It's a possibility.

According to sj-r.com,

The U.S. Supreme Court will be making a major decision this Spring on legalizing state-sanctioned sports gambling. Currently, federal law prohibits it everywhere but Nevada.

If they allow others to participate, the floodgates will be opening. Several states hurting for money like Illinois will be trying to jump on the bandwagon.

What are legislators thinking about the situation?

“It would be wrong to not study this and see if it would be beneficial for the state should sports betting be legalized in the United States,” said state Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie. “If this is going to be a viable legal business, we don’t want to be behind 30 other states who have legalized it.”

There has been talk of expanding casino licenses in Illinois, which would benefit Rockford. The only problem is some experts feel the video gaming and casino markets are already saturated. Sports gambling would be another source of revenue.

You're not going to stop people from gambling on sports. They will find illegal ways to do it. Why not make it legal, so the state can regulate it and make money.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

What do you think?
