Tragic news broke early this morning after a child died from injuries sustained in a house fire on Rockford's west side.

After receiving a call just before 2 a.m., first responders arrived at a house on Winnebago Street to find it engulfed in flames with residents outside the home, except for a two-year-old child still inside an upstairs bedroom. According to WREX, that's where firefighters found the child.

Four residents had gotten out okay and told officials that a child was still inside in an upstairs bedroom. Firefighters were able to find the child in one of those upstairs bedrooms unconscious but alive.

Though alive while en route to the hospital, the child later died to do injuries from the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown and still under investigation.
