The Illinois High School Association officially has announced punishment for the Jefferson boys basketball team following this week's fight after a win over East.Jefferson head coach Todd Brannan and five players from the team will be suspended for tonight's Regional Final at Belvidere (North) High School. IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman:

“This type of conduct is unacceptable and won’t be tolerated. We appreciate the cooperation we have received from both schools and their support in sending the message that individuals who fight will lose the opportunity to represent their schools in IHSA events."

The IHSA says sanctions for East will be announced in the near future.

Officials with District 205 have released a statement as well. Here's a portion:

What happened is highly unusual. The behavior and actions that took place are not acceptable, and they do not fall in line with what we practice every day in Rockford Public Schools with our students and student athletes.

This was an isolated incident and does not define or depict our schools. Our student athletes, coaches, community members and parents act in an appropriate and professional manner the vast majority of the time. We remain disappointed in the actions of a few and proud of the direction of the Rockford Public Schools athletic programs.

A high-drama high school basketball playoff game between Jefferson and East turned into a high-drama situation after the buzzer as well.

The two teams were playing Tuesday night at the Belvidere North 4A Regional. The game went down to the wire with Jefferson scoring a basket as the final buzzer sounded to grab a 51-49 win.

Scott Leber at WTVO Eyewitness News reports on what happened next:

Seconds later while the players were shaking hands on the court tempers flared. Fans, adults and students, poured out of the stands onto the floor. There was shoving and punches were thrown. It's estimated that 40 to 50 people ran onto the floor.

Police were called in to restore order and to clear the gymnasium.

Boone Country Sheriff's Police say no arrests were made and no one was injured. It's unknown at this time if any players or coaches might be disciplined for their roles in the brawl.

Our own Dave Schmidt of StatelineSportsHub.com reached out to Matt Troha of the IHSA for a statement:

We have already spoken to administrators at both schools and are collecting information.
