Changes could be coming to Illinois schools if the Senate gives it a "yes." The House already approved replacing armed guards in school with social workers, a.k.a. mental health professionals. One side of the argument is "putting police officers in schools aren't the only way to keep kids safe" (Chicago Democratic Rep. Juliana Stratton) the other is hiring is "more police officers to combat an epidemic of school shootings," (Republican Rep. Peter Breen), according to WIFR.

If this becomes the new norm in Illinois, it will be interesting to see how many mental health professionals are used in each school. Would the number be based on the number of students? Would it be proven effective as an alternative to armed guards?
