This past Memorial Day Weekend, I attended my first Indy 500. The entire day is VERY impressive and just a blast!

Being able to attend the single biggest sporting event in the world, pretty amazing. All of the things leading up to the race, the people watching, the fly overs, the celebrities that attended, what an insane day. Oh, and there was a race...and a damn good one. Juan Pablo Montoya captured the checkered flag on Sunday in a race that was filled with lead changes and plenty of action. The friends that I went with are very into the race, and were schooling me on Indy 500 history on the way there.

I found this list of 20 Fun Facts About The Indy 500 newsday.com Some of my personal favorites are:

  • In 1936 Louis Meyer asked for a bottle of buttermilk after he became the first three-time winner. Since 1956, the winner traditionally drinks a bottle of milk in Victory Lane
  • The fastest qualifying speed is 231.468 by Buddy Lazier in 1996.
  • The closest margin of victory was in 1992 when Al Unser Jr. edged Scott Goodyear by .043 of a second
  • Its been said that Yankee Stadium, the Rose Bowl, Churchill Downs, the Colosseum in Rome and Vatican City all can fit inside the Indy oval (253 acres).
